Just about everyone has heard of IMDb and most know it stands for "Internet Movie Data Base" but it is so much more than just that.
Actors, voice actors, directors, and just about anyone involved in the making of entertainment titles can be listed, along with their work on the site.
But what you may not know is, it's " not" just for films and movies and it's not just for celebrities. There is a whole array of lesser-known uses and categories to access and be a part of.
The Sometimes Overlooked Categories
So you may already have an IMDb page but did you know that you can also get credits for the following categories?
Audiobooks
Commercials
Music Videos
Podcast series or episodes
Sporting Events/Awards
Video Games/Apps
If you don't already have a page, IMDb has both online and video tutorials with other sites like Backstage offering guides on creating a free IMDb page/or paid IMDb pro page. Once this page is live, a new title can be created or you can add yourself to an existing one. Like any website, it can take time to get used to navigating your way but it’s well worth the time to learn to use and update.
As it's a database, if you have an IMDb Pro account, you can search for all sorts of things, like games in development, casting directors, voice actors, game development studios, and more. So it can be a great networking search engine.
The Sometimes Overlooked Games
Within the video game category, an area that isn't always taken advantage of involves Indie Video Games on IMDb. Perhaps the studio is based outside of the US, or perhaps it has been assumed that IMDb is just for Triple AAA game titles but that just isn’t the case. Most of the time, as long as the video game is publicly available and distributed by an established retailer, it can be listed. However, this listing generally has to be put in by the developer or publisher of the game. It doesn't happen automatically. It’s akin to creating a second website and can provide valuable insights to the game.
Anyone with an IMDb account (free or paid) can request their credit to be listed with Amazon owned IMDb and it’s probably worth the SEO clout they can bring to the table. It's also a way for writers, producers, and of course voice actors to be credited for their work, in one place alongside the game. A complete listing of credits of key players involved in making the game usually isn't the norm for most gaming streaming services.
Other places to list your video game and to use as video game resource are IGDB (The Internet Game Base) in conjunction with Twitch (also owned by Amazon), Moby Games and Metacritic.
